Statue of Liberty

Picture
Imagine you were on a ship and had sailed across the ocean to a new land of hope and freedom.  As you came close to the shore the first thing you saw was this image of Miss Liberty.  Thousands of immigrants came through New York Harbor past the Statue of Liberty.  The Statue was a gift to America from the people of France to celebrate democracy.  She was made in 1870 and holds a golden flame in her right hand and the date July 4, 1776 in her left hand.  Her green color comes from the weathered copper used to make her.  Thousands of Americans  visit her annually in her spot on Liberty Island in New York Harbor.

The Statue of Liberty can be found on one of the many islands in New York Harbor, Liberty Island.  Visitors can only reach Lady Liberty by traveling on a ferry.  It is very near to Ellis Island, where immigrants from many, many countries stopped along the way to the shores of America.
