Washington, D.C. was chosen as the place for our nation's capital when the state of Maryland gave up 68.25 square miles of land to establish a capital city that was not within the border of any state.  The area was called the District of Columbia.  The citizens of the District of Columbia have tried to establish statehood for the D. C. area, but they have been unsuccessful.  Washington, D. C. belongs to all Americans.
